Clare ended their Littlewoods Ireland Div 1 Camogie League in Birr on Saturday afternoon with a loss to Offaly, two goals from the Faithful county at key points during the second half proving to be decisive for the hosts.

Playing against the wind in the opening half, Clare were much the better side. Aoife Keane opened the scoring with a point, following a short clearance from Mairead Jennings in the Offaly goals. Arlene Watkins responded in kind for the home side and Chloe Morey landed her first free just two minutes later. Debbie Flynn levelled matters and when Orlagh Kirwan landed a free in just outside the small square Flynn was on hand to collect the clearance and put her side ahead. Watkins added for Offaly before Aoibheann Malone, following an inch perfect pass from Aoife Keane narrowed the gap to a point. It was Flynn who extended the lead back to two points with 18 minutes on the clock. Clare again reduced the deficit, a Morey free having the distance. Three points on the bounce for the home side, Delaney, Triona McDonald and Flynn made it double scores in favour of the Faithful County. However two points, Keane from play followed by a Morey free saw Clare go in at the break trailing by two, Clare 0-6 Offaly 0-8.

Clare started the second half with a brace of frees from Morey to level the sides. However with Kirwan winning the puckout she fed forward and in the ensuing goalmouth scramble, Ann Marie Guinan managed to get the touch to send the ball over the line. A brace of points followed for the home side, Delaney from play and a Siobhan Flannery free. Morey with a free pulled a point back for Clare with 43 minutes on the clock but Offlay substitute Grace Teehan travelled long with possession and finished over the bar. Clare responded with a Morey point from play. Again Offaly won the battle for possession from the pucout and this time Mairead Daly picked out Delaney who struck for goal. Regan Conway pointed for Clares last score of the game in the 58th minute, and Flannery finished the scoring when when she pointed in injury time to leave Offaly winners 2-12 to 0-11.

Clare 3-16 Tyrone 4.3

Tyrone made the long journey to Wolfe Tones Camogie Grounds for Round 5 of the Div 3 Littlewoods league. They had in their team for this encounter a number of players from the Eglish Camogie Club who were the recent finalists in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club camogie final.
Tyrone hit for their first goal in the first minute from Claire Jordan of the Eglish club, she would add a further 2 goals to her tally by game end. Sinead Power opened the Clare score sheet with a brace of points before Tyrone struck for their second goal mid-way in the first half. Clare had to work hard for the second quarter to reduce the deficit before half time. Louise McDonnell struck for goal to reduce the margin and this was followed up with a free from Keelin Lyons to level the game and just before the break Helen Hehir and Niamh Mulqueen would add 2 points from play to leave the half time score Clare 1-5 to 2-0 for Tyrone. 

In the second half Clare knuckled down to push on with their lead and through great team work managed to register a second half tally of 2-11 to just 2-2 from Tyrone. To the credit of the Clare defence they were successful in helping to launch many attacks by picking out their forwards to execute their scores. The Clare defence had some excellent displays from Captain Aisling McMahon, Louise Browne, Deanna Considine and Katie O'Flanagan. Seven Clare Players shared in their massive scoring tally scoring an impressive 3-13 from play with just 2 points from placed balls.

Munster U16B Championship Cup Final

Clare 2-8 Cork 2-11 (After extra time)

Extra time was required to separate Clare and Cork on Sunday afternoon in Ballyagran in the Munster U16B Championship Final. Clare had the dream start, when straight from the throw in they went on the attack , winning a free which Orla O’Brien sent goal bound with Chloe Neylon going high to get the vital touch to strike to the top corner of the net. A short puckout from Cork went over out over the line and O’Brien showed great skill to pick out the roaming Michelle Sheedy in a crowded Cork defence, with Sheedy adding a point.A Cork free struck by Jennifer Murphy travelled long to the Clare half back line and the resulting sideline cut by Orlaith Cummins travelling at pace saw Eilis Cahill go high to neatly catch and clear back down the field. Clare were on the attack again, and with the ball defended out over the end line O’Brien converted the resulting ’45. Corks Katlynn Holland opened the Leesiders account in the ninth minute when she struck accurately from out on the wing to split the posts. This point spurred on the Leesiders but their next effort went wide of the post. Mid way through the half and Cork were piling on the pressure, Clare net minder Shauna Doyle, who put in a sterling performance throughout, dealt capably with a rasper of a shot from Mairead Crowley and was called on again just a few minutes later as the tenacious Cork forwards went in search of a green flag. With a ’45 awarded Evarose Boylan added for Cork. Again Cork pushed forward and when Boylan stood over a free on the thirtieth minute, her superb strike travelled to the top corner of the Clare net to level the game. Neylon added a point for the Banner outfit in injury to leave daylight between the sides at the half time whistle, Clare 1-3 Cork 1-2.

Clares O’Brien converted a free at the restart, however the young Rebelettes upped the tempo and three points on the bounce, Cummins from play bookended by a brace of frees from Boylan saw the Cork outfit level the game and go ahead by the minimum with eight minutes played in the second half.

Both defences were working hard, pushing back the attacking forwards and it took till the fiftieth minute for the next score to be registered. A free from Clares Sheedy to again level the sides. O’Brien edged Clare back in front with three minutes of time remaining, however the Cork outfit were not giving up. A Boylan free was dropped in low and Doyles take down, control and clearance belied her young age. Boylans next attempt just a minute later tied up the sides again on 1-6 apiece. Both sides had opportunities but with the wind carrying the ball wide, the sides were deadlocked on 1-6 as referee TP Sullivan sounded the whistle.

With extra time to be played both sides regrouped. Cork started well in the first period of extra time, Siobhan O’Donovan and Sinead O’Donnell both pointing in quick succession. O’Brien converted a free to pull a point back for the Banner side. O’Donovans next effort also split the posts and with 6 minutes played in the first period of extra time, O’Donnell struck for Corks second goal. Clare responded with an O’Brien free to see the Banner trail 1-8 to 2-9 at the half way point of extra time.

A Boylan free was followed by a point from play by Crowley with 16 minutes of the extra time played however Clare were still fighting hard. O’Brien who had been instrumental for Clare throughout fired home for Clares second goal in the 18thminute however for this young Banner outfit time ran out and it was Cork who took the U16B Cup home.

Clare battled hard throughout and were well served in defence by Michaela McNamara and Eilis Cahill who was fearless, Shauna Doyles performance in the Clare goals earned her a well deserved Player of the Game award while up front Orla O’Brien, Chloe Neylon and Michelle Sheedy were industrious throughout. For Cork Evarose Boylan put in a Trojan performance.
